March Bright Club

Bright Club made a triumphant return to Oxford last month, as four researchers and two comedians, Ben Van der Velde and Joe Wells, put on a brilliant night of comedy to a jam-packed Jericho Tavern.

Grant kicked things off, and set the tone for the evening with a selection of bum jokes and a discussion on the metrication of a f**kload.  And how could we expect an astrophysicist to get through a comedy set without at least one reference to Uranus?!

Fran contemplated life as a particle physicist, and described the quest to discover new particles as being like ‘physics fan fiction’; the equivalent of imagining if Gandalf had an invisible but much heavier twin.

Liz got us thinking about the difference between being a member of a choir and being a member of the Church of Scientology – turns out, not much.

And the award for best prop of the night went to Pete and his portable pillow, with a ‘unique’ demonstration of what your sleeping position says about you.

5 things we love about The Jericho Tavern

1. Radiohead's first gig. Nuff said.
2. It's no longer called 'The Philanderer and Firkin'.
3. They are one of two pubs we have drunk in that have Israeli cities as part of their name (the other one is Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham).
4. Bright Club Oxford is 'in association' with them!
5. Bright Club attendees can get a beer and burger for just £10.50 on Bright Club nights. More details below....

There are just a handful of tickets left for Bright Club on 19th March. Book your tickets at www.scienceoxford.com/live.

The Jericho Tavern are offering a special £10.50 Beer & Burger deal for all Bright Club attendees.
Deal includes handmade British cheese burger & fries / handmade spinach & lentil burger, topped with houmous, served with fries. Drinks would be a pint of Becks Vier or Aspall’s Suffolk Cider, 175ml glass of Sunstone Chardonnay or Sunstone Shiraz or a 14oz glass of draught lemonade or Pepsi.
Offer available 1200-2200 in the downstairs restaurant only.

March Line Up!

With just 1 month to go until Oxford's second Bright Club, we are very excited to announce our amazing line-up!  Joining us on the Jericho Tavern stage are....

Pete Oliver on the importance of catching Z's
Francesca Day asks what particle physicists have been doing with themselves since the discovery of the Higgs Boson
Grant Miller introduces us to Citizen Science
Liz Garnett on singing and self-identity

Holding it all together is our compere for the evening - Ben Van der Velde.  Ben was our headline act back in November, and we enjoyed his set so much, we've invited him back.
"exquisite comic timing...wonderfully clownish physical comedy." British Theatre Guide
"left the audience beaming from ear to ear with satirical quips and hilariously sinister tales." BBC 3 Counties

And they will all be joined by our our headline act - Joe Wells.
"A star of the future... some of the most surprising and thought-provoking material coming from any comedian in his early 20s" The Guardian
"Highly original, inspired and suitably different from the rest of the crowd... brilliantly crafted jokes" Comedy Central

Tickets are now on sale.  Book online at www.scienceoxford.com/live/whats-on.

Shreddies, Sex Shops and Rocket Science

Oh, what a night (Valli, Season, Season, et al, 1963)

Sorry it's taken so long to put a blog up, but we've only just recovered!  We had 5 great acts from Oxford, and Ben Van der Velde brought us to a brilliant close with the significance of Newton's Third Law if you sneeze during sex.

The award for best joke of the night award went to Aleks's "You need to watch Quantum of Solace 10*35 times to get the same amount of solace as one hug".  But it was a close run thing: Felix brought us tales of Shreddies and Sheep.  Lucy talked about girls and engineering.  Ross took it out on Americans, and, in fact, everyone.  And Dan gave us Iberian sex shops.

But pride of place goes to our compere Ivo Graham, who managed to turn Dan's dad's anti-heckle into the purest comedy gold.

Roll on next time!

"a sharp and crafty gagsmith, with wittily obtuse takes on...an impressively wide range of topics...bringing flair and confidence to them all. " Steve Bennett, Chortle (November 2011)

"exquisite comic timing...wonderfully clownish physical comedy." British Theatre Guide
"left the audience beaming from ear to ear with satirical quips and hilariously sinister tales." BBC 3 Counties
